Location: South East Madagascar.
Rooms: 6 East African style tents on stilts situated along the bank of the Mandrare River. Amazing views of the river and of the mountain range beyond. Simple style but well-furnished and very comfortable.
Activities: Day & night walks in the sacred Spiny Forest and the sacred Gallery Forest in search of lemurs and other wildlife, sundowners in the baobab field, visit of the big Market (Thursday & Saturday, worth a visit!), visit of the school, the villagers also come to dance at least once per guests stay, bird watching at the camp – up to 15 different species. Good range of activities for children too.
Children: Children of all ages are welcome at Mandrare River Camp.
Our Opinion: Mandrare River Camp is a fabulous luxury tented camp in a very remote and unspoilt corner of the South East. The camp is located in a forest of tamarind trees on the bank of the Mandrare River and offers easy access to a few local sacred forests (including the famous spiny forest) where you will find lemurs. Guests staying at Mandrare have total exclusivity of the visits and activities as there is no other lodge or camp around. Despite the location of the camp there is a vibrant atmosphere in the sourrounding villages and a visit of the local market is a must. We visited Mandrare very recently in June 2012 and were very impressed with the camp. The tents are simple but comfortable, the activities (including lemur watching) are varied and interesting, the guides are knowledgeable and charming and the French Malagasy dishes prepared by the chef were just scrumptious! Mandrare is the only camp in the whole country to offer an exclusive wildlife & cultural experience.
