Galle

Galle is Sri Lanka’s fourth largest city and arguably the most attractive of all the currently inhabited cities. It enjoys a rich history ranging from the times of King Solomon through to the colonial era of the Portuguese who first arrived in 1505.

Why visit Galle?

  • Wander in the charming streets of the Fort and discover its rich history
  • Enjoy some retail therapy in Galle’s many quirky shops
  • Tuck into lunch at one of the city’s up and coming restaurants
  • Relax on one of the many beaches & cool down with a swim

In the late 16th Century the Portuguese built a fort to ward off any trouble with the kings of Kandy, but it was the Dutch in the 17th Century who built the vast thirty six hectares fort that dominates the promontory of Galle and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
