Location: Along the dry Auab riverbed in the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve.
Rooms: 11 11 climate-controlled, thatched kulalas (the word means ‘to sleep’) which merge impeccably into the timeless desert landscape, with exquisite fittings and fixtures, and innovative bleached decks – each with a private plunge pool. Every kulala also has a rooftop ‘skybed’ for romantic stargazing, with both indoor and outdoor showers.
Facilities: The main lodge houses a library, wine cellar, craft boutique, lounge and dining areas. The interiors have been designed with neutral colours, beautiful textures and natural light to reflect the colours of the surrounding desert environment.
Activities: Activities include morning guided drives to the spectacular towering dunes of Sossusvlei, through a private gate into the reserve. Guided drives and walks are also offered on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve with incredible views, desert-adapted wildlife and plants. Another optional activity is early morning ballooning, beginning at first light. The balloon safari offers a truly unique experience to soar silently above the magnificent sand dunes and desert and ends with a champagne breakfast served at the landing site.
Children: Children over 6 are welcome.
Our Opinion: A magical oasis situated along the dry Auab riverbed in the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, Little Kulala celebrates the splendour and solitude of the Namib Desert. The reserve is home to all forms of desert wildlife near the spectacular sights of Sossusvlei, and borders the expansive Namib Naukluft National Park. The Sossusvlei dunes rise dramatically more than 300 metres and are surrounded by awe inspiring topography. The emphasis on game viewing is focused on the smaller desert fauna, spectacular scenery and the incredible night sky. Larger desert-adapted wildlife such as ostrich, springbok and gemsbok flourish here together with carnivores such as bat-eared fox, Cape fox, cheetah and black-backed jackal.
