Copan Ruins

The Copan ruins, considered by many as one of the most spectacular cities of the ancient Mayas, are located in the western part of Honduras, about 60 kilometres from the border with Guatemala. UNESCO declared it a world heritage site in 1980. Often called the Paris of the Maya world, Copan is famous for its intricate carvings and hieroglyphics.

Why visit Copan Ruins?

Highlights include the impressive hieroglyphic stairway, decorated ball court and Rosalila temple which was discovered intact underneath Temple 16.

As well as the ruins themselves and the excellent museum, the nearby town of Copan Ruinas has a pleasant small museum and is a quiet and atmospheric place to wander around.
