Majete Wildlife Reserve covers some 700 sq. km lies to the west of the Shire River and consists mainly of miombo woodland with dense patches of riverine forest.
The rugged, wild, fenced reserve is home to the elusive black rhino, as well as elephant, buffalo, nyala, sable, eland and hartebeest. Leopards have recently been reintroduced as part of a pioneering conservation project.
This is also a great area for birding: specials include a breeding population of Rock Pratincole that inhabits rocky islands in the Shire River, and Pels Fishing Owl can be found in the riparian forest of the river systems. Other interesting species include Arnotts’ Chat, the White-breasted Cuckooshrike and Racket-tailed Rollers.
Our preferred lodge in the reserve is Mkulumadzi, which is situated within a private concession of 7,000 hectares and enjoys an idyllic location at the confluence of two rivers shaded by giant leadwood trees. Game viewing can be enjoyed by 4×4 vehicle, on foot, by boat and from a hide overlooking a waterhole.
