Location: On a remote stretch of beach to the north of Bagamoyo in Saadani National Park.
Rooms: 15 tented cottages strung along the beach. Each cottage is large and airy with wooden frames carrying cool grass roofs. All are fully en suite and have an unrestricted view onto the ocean with a full length verandah. Swathes of white fabric adorn the ceilings and king size beds are skilfully carved in Zanzibari style.
Facilities: Swimming pools, restaurant, bar, remote beach free from crowds.
Activities: Game drives, walking safaris, river boat safaris, bird watching, snorkelling, local village tours.
Children: Children of all ages are welcome.
Our Opinion: Set in the only oceanfront national park in East Africa, Saadani Safari Lodge is located in a unique area with an extraordinary diversity of scenery and wildlife, with beach, bush and river combining to produce a colourful array of ecosystems. Elephants have been known to cavort on the beach and just a stone’s throw from the open sea, hippos wallow in the estuary of the Wami River. The white sandy beach at the lodge disappears to the horizon in both directions. Out on the ocean there is a small tidal sand island set in clear waters, which makes for a lovely ocean boat trip. Here you can enjoy a picnic lunch under shade on the island’s sands and there are also good snorkelling spots just offshore. Dolphins and green turtles are often seen at the island and love to play around the boat.
