Situated where the north savannah grassland and flood forest meet on the Rupununi River, Karanambu has been made world famous by Diane McTurk with her work in rehabilitating orphaned Giant River Otters. Many of the greatest natural history film units such as National Geographic and the BBC have been to film Diane at work and she has created the Karanambu Trust to protect the habitat and thus ensure the long term survival of the otters.

Visitors are welcomed to Karanambu Ranch by the McTurk family and it is possible to participate in the ongoing work there including feeding and caring for the otters as well as swimming with them in the river and merely by being there you are helping the trust as a percentage of the daily rate goes towards the trust’s work. The area also offers superb general animal viewing and birdwatching and guests can also enjoy excellent fishing for Peacock Bass and boating through the flooded forest to explore this stunning ecosystem. Boat trips to see the largest waterlilies in the world, the Victoria Amazonia are another real highlight.
