Our Opinion: Just north of the village of Matemwe are situated the whitewashed walls and thatched roofs of Matemwe Lodge. Having enjoyed an extensive refurbishment, the hotel now offers some of Zanzibar’s finest Swahili style accommodation with fabulous views out across the Indian Ocean. There are a number of non-motorised watersports available, as well as the chance to relax by one of the lodge’s swimming pools or on the white sandy beach. Scuba diving and deep-sea fishing can also be arranged on request, as well as snorkelling trips to Mnemba Reef, sailing or fishing with local fishermen, guided reef and village walks, cycling and kayaking.
