Location: Situated within the arid Namib Desert on the 37,000 hectares’ private Kulala Wilderness Reserve, and is one of the closest lodges to the iconic red dunes of the Sossusvlei.
Rooms: 23 thatched and canvas “kulalas” (“to sleep” in Oshiwambo) with en suite bathrooms and verandahs. Each room is built on a wooden platform to catch the cooling breeze and has a deck on the flat rooftop where bedrolls are placed for guests to sleep under the myriad stars of Namibia’s night sky.
Facilities: The main lodge area has a lounge, bar, dining area, plunge pool, and wrap-around verandah overlooking a waterhole which attracts lots of wildlife such as gemsbok, springbok, ostrich and jackal.
Activities: Day and night game drives, guided walks, biking, hot air balloon tours, sleeping under the stars. Early morning guided nature drives to the spectacular dunes of Sossusvlei are through a private gate on the Tsauchab River.
Children: Children of all ages are welcome.
Our Opinion: Kulala Desert Lodge is an excellent base for visiting the world famous dunes of Sossusvlei with the benefit of a private gate to access the dunes. Nature drives and walks are also offered on the private reserve with incredible desert views.
