Location: Near Dundee in rural KwaZulu Natal, overlooking the famous Buffalo River at the site of Lieutenants’ Coghill & Melvill’s valiant attempts to escape the Zulu hordes, Fugitives’ Drift Lodge is situated on a 2,500 hectares reserve just a few kilometres from the battle sites of both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.
Rooms: Retaining its colonial heritage style and set in the colourful, well established gardens, the 8 luxury free-standing cottages and the 2 bedroom annexe cottage are spacious and light with wooden finishes. All cottages have en suite bathrooms with separate bath & shower, as well as a private verandah affording views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge.
Facilities: The dining room and lounge house a remarkable collection of memorabilia from the Zulu War. The Harford Library boasts magnificent views over the Buffalo River Gorge and houses a historical collection of books and memorabilia. Lunch is served here daily.
There is a social verandah surrounding an open campfire and a large swimming pool in the gardens.
Activities: Battlefield tours & guided walks. The reserve itself is home to diverse and abundant wildlife including giraffe, zebra, kudu, hartebeest and a host of other smaller antelope, whilst more than 275 bird species have been recorded in the area. The Buffalo River Gorge is a Natural Heritage site where you can enjoy some spectacular walks. Horse riding and mountain biking are also possible from the lodge.
Children: Children of all ages are welcome. Children under 12 are not allowed to go on tours.
