Our Opinion: Located on the private palm-lined beach of Lake Kivu, the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel offers a good base for a relaxing stay, as well as for exploring the local area around Gisenyi. Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s largest lake, and the sixth largest lake in Africa. Gisenyi (also referred to by its new name Rubavu) is a large town spread over several hills on the northern edge of the lake. Once a Belgian colonial beach resort, Gisenyi’s waterfront is lined with faded old mansions.
