Location: Thonga Beach Lodge is nestled into beautiful Maputaland coastal dune forest with sweeping views of the stunning beach below.
Rooms: 12 spacious, thatched bush suites raised on wooden stilts and hidden within the coastal dune forest. Inspired by local Thonga architecture, the rooms have been carefully positioned to guarantee maximum privacy. Some rooms offer sea views, whilst others are set within the dune forest. All have air conditioning and private balconies. Luxuriously decorated with bleached wood and glass, natural materials have been used to create a light, airy feel. All rooms are en suite with bath, shower and twin vanity basins.
Facilities: The dining area opens on to an expansive wooden deck, where you can enjoy Maputuland’s warm weather and the lodge’s sumptuous meals. Most meals will be served al fresco, or you can head for the beach and dine by candlelight on the shore of the Indian Ocean. The lounge, with its comfortable couches and a cosy fireplace, is the perfect place to unwind after a day at the beach. Located upstairs, it offers spectacular views of the beach, as well as the incredible forest surrounding the lodge. To beat the midday heat, the lodge has a swimming pool and for those needing a little pampering, the lodge also has a rejuvenation centre to revitalise body, mind and soul.
Activities: Snorkelling, guided forest walks, scuba diving, bird watching, fishing, kayaking, sundowners at Lake Sibaya and cultural tours to the local Mabibi community.
Children: Children of all ages are welcome.
Our Opinion: Thonga is the ideal place to discover a largely unspoilt coastal wilderness: the area is a magical place of coastal forests, grasslands, bush, shimmering lakes and exquisite sandy beaches. Its crystal clear, warm waters offer some of South Africa’s best snorkelling and fantastic offshore scuba diving.
