The 7 nights/8 days Shira route approaches Kilimanjaro through forest and moorland from the west, exploring the unspoilt wilderness of the Shira Plateau around Moir Hut and the Lent Hills, before traversing beneath the stunning ice fields to summit via Barafu Camp.
This unique 8 days’ trek ensures maximum possible acclimatisation with time spent walking and camping in the quieter wilderness areas of the mountain, away from the crowds. Most fixed walking days comprise just a half day’s walk, with the option of longer and higher walks in the afternoon if desired. This trek has a summit success rate of 86% to Uhuru Peak and 93% to Stella Point.
The time spent on the mountain allows plenty of opportunities to enjoy the magnificent scenery. The views of Kibo in the sharp light of morning and early evening are often stunning and the Lent Hills, close to the western flank of the summit cone, are very rarely visited. Shira is a little-used approach route and there is sufficient time to enjoy the unspoilt wilderness of Shira Plateau before the convergence with other routes in the later stages of the climb. This route also has some stunning campsites – an important feature with all the time to acclimatise and rest!
Regular weekly set departures are guaranteed throughout the year (except during the months of April, May & November), commencing in Arusha on Friday, with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 15 trekkers. The ratio of guides to trekkers is 2:1, which is the best on the mountain, and an excellent level of service is offered throughout the climb.
Down jackets, sleeping bags & liners, mattresses & walking poles, are available for hire.
Emergency oxygen is included as standard on all our treks, to be used in the event of an evacuation from the mountain.
