The turquoise waters that surround this enchanting island are home to a wealth of colourful marine life and coral-encrusted shipwrecks resulting in some fabulous scuba diving and snorkelling. The many coves and bays, which once gave refuge to Admiral Nelson as well as a few pirates over the centuries are now home to a flourishing sailing scene which culminates in the world-famous Antigua Sailing Week in April – an extravaganza of yachting and partying.
The island also boasts an intriguing colonial history with a strong naval tradition dating back to its role as an important Royal Navy base in the Napoleonic Wars still reflected in places such as the picturesque English Harbour, Clarence House and the UNESCO listed Nelson’s Dockyard. The Antiguan Carnival in July and August is another cultural highlight celebrating the emancipation of slavery with wonderfully vibrant and colourful pageants, steel bands and calypso music.
Antigua is also blessed with stunning scenery ranging from lush rainforest to beautiful farmland with banana, coconut and mango groves and to spend a day exploring the island’s interior with its colourful villages and old sugar mills is highly recommended. Just a 90-minute ferry ride away is its sister island of Barbuda with its almost deserted pink sand beaches and the frigate bird sanctuary where over 5000 frigate birds and 170 other bird species outnumber the locals by some margin !
