Argentina

As the eighth-largest country in the world, Argentina is home to a staggering diversity of spectacular natural wonders where everything is on a vast scale.

From the thundering cascades of the Iguazu Falls to the ever growing ice-blue glaciers of southern Patagonia and from the continent’s highest peak of Aconcagua to the mighty southern wright whales that cruise its coastal waters, the country never ceases to amaze.

Yet the human story is equally captivating with a strong Incan influence in the north followed by the Spanish colonisation of the whole country, which has remained at the core of the people’s soul and manifested itself in the sophistication of its cities and towns.

The chic boulevards of Buenos Aires with its high fashion and passionate traditions of tango are testament to its Latin roots and ensure an enthralling visit.

Ice-walk on the Perito Moreno glacier

Perito Moreno ice-walk

Embark on an ice-walk on the famous Perito Moreno glacier. This centrepiece of the stunning Los Glaciares National Park is one of the world’s few remaining glaciers that is still growing. Its sheer scale and the ever present icebergs are a visual experience enhanced by the dramatic collapses of ice from the glacier’s 50 metre high face. Specialised mountain guides will take you to the very edge of the glacier and then after placing crampons on your footwear, you go onto the frozen slopes. Grooves, small lagoons of the most incredible blue colour and gullies where water disappears into bottomless abysses are some of the experiences you will have during the two hour walk.

Discover the colours of the Humahuaca Canyon

Quebrada de Humahuaca

The Quebrada de Humahuaca lies in the northernmost province of Jujuy, the true kingdom of the Andes.  It is the province with the largest population of indigenous Indians from many different tribes who still worship the Pacha Mama, the Incan goddess of Mother Earth. Your private vehicle will take you through some of the most spectacular scenery of North Argentina. The Canyon of Humahuaca is famous for its giant palette of jewel-painted slabs of rock arching across the mountain sides at Maimará, a testimony to the rich variety of minerals to be found here. You visit Purmamarca, a tiny little village which huddles at the base of the striking Cerro de los Siete Colores, the Seven Coloured Mountain. It is a rainbow of colour which comes to life in the glow of the afternoon sun, dominated by a deep violet stripe across the middle which fades downwards into strips of turquoise, jade and sky-blue and upwards into hues of pink, orange and yellow.

Adventurous Iguazu Falls

Adventurous Iguazu Falls

An open jeep takes you to through the jungle surrounding the Iguazu Falls, where you can expect to see orchids, bromelias, palms and a range of birds, butterflies and monkeys that occasionally cross the trail. You leave the jeep and hike to the 20 meters high Macuco Falls that splashes down into a cool pool which is perfect for a dip on a warm day. The tour continues with a boat trip up-river in inflatable rubber dinghies to the base of the famous Devil’s Gorge, an adventure in itself, as the boat leaps through the spray of the Three Musketeer waterfall.

Traditionally the best time to visit Argentina is in the drier Spring and Summer months from October to March. The Autumnal colours of April are wonderful especially in Patagonia. The skiing season is from June to September.
