Location: Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp is beautifully located in a broad valley at the confluence of two tributaries of the Hoanib River in the northern part of the private Palmwag Concession. Its location straddles the Palmwag area and the iconic Skeleton Coast National Park, in one of the most remote areas of the Kaokoveld.
Rooms: 7 twin-bedded tents and 1 family unit, each comprising stylish en suite bedrooms with shaded outdoor decks. Flanked to the east and west by rugged hills, the camp looks out over stunning, starkly beautiful scenery and offers all the luxuries and amenities for an unforgettable stay.
Facilities: The main area of the camp houses indoor and outdoor lounge areas overlooking a waterhole. Meals are served in the main dining room, with a bar nearby. The firepit is a central focal point in the evenings for a drink before and after dinner, and there is also a swimming pool where you can cool off during the day.
Activities: Day and night game drives, guided walks, exploring the dunes, bird watching, trips to desert oases and the wild coast. The area covered is so vast with so much to see and experience that you generally leave camp after breakfast and spend the full day exploring the park. A picnic lunch is enjoyed out in the wild and you return to camp in the late afternoon. Because of the uniqueness and vastness of this area, most explorations are undertaken in 4×4 vehicles, however there are plenty of opportunities to walk and stretch the legs too and owing to the pristine nature of this area many parts are accessible only on foot, since vehicle tracks can damage the environment.
Children: Children of all ages are welcome.
Our Opinion: Only accessible by light aircraft, Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp is situated in one of the last pristine wilderness areas in the world. Surrounded by remarkable, desolate, but stunningly beautiful desert landscapes, the night skies are some of the clearest on earth. With its stark shoreline strewn with bleached whalebones and other skeletal remains, the Skeleton Coast is well named. It is wild and desolate, a place of stark, harsh beauty that yet sustains unusual life, from enormous colonies of Cape fur seals to the ancient welwitschia plant.
