Mishing Villages – Assam

Picture2

The Mishings live on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in North East India in ‘Chang ghar’, houses built of lattice wood on raised platforms. All Mishing women are expert weavers and watching them at their looms is fascinating. The indoor life of a Mishing person revolves around the kitchen area where the family can get together and where life has remained relatively unscathed by the modern world.

Ladakh – Early Moring Prayers at Thiskey Monastery

Picture3

The daily early morning prayers at Thiskey are an experience not to be missed with the incense, chanting and barley tea. Located at 3,500 metres and associated with the Gulag (Yellow Hat) Buddhist sect, the monastery is an impressive twelve-story complex with fabulous views and also houses many items of Buddhist art such as stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings and swords. A visit to the kitchens with their large cooking fires and pots needed to feed the 60 resident monks gives a wonderful insight into the workings of this place.

The dry season from October to April is generally considered the best time to travel to India.
