Location: On a hillside with views of the Pacific Ocean, this upscale, adults-only resort is surrounded by jungle. It’s 7 km from both Parque Nacional Marino Ballena and Playa Utiva.

Our Opinion: Surrounded by jungle that hosts the finest fauna and flora the area has to offer, rests 12 stunning, all-glass villas. Finished with pure white soft furnishings these villas ooze peacefulness and define luxury. In addition, the pool deck and walking paths are replete with Javanese statues. In a word: super-relaxing.

Highlights included white water rafting, zip wires, releasing new-born turtles into the sea, being in a boat amongst 200 dolphins, riding on beaches... Children and parents ticked off many from our “must do things in our lives” list. In terms of lodges, would rank Pacuare and Lapa Rios equal first.
