The Rincon de la Vieja National Park spans over 34,000 acres (12,759 ha) and helps protect both montane forests and dwarf cloud forest. There are a number of trails that wind through the park, passing hot springs and waterfalls along the way. It is also home to a variety of wildlife including sloths, tapirs, kinkajous, pumas and both howler and spider monkeys. Following a recent volcanic eruption it is no longer possible to hike to the crater itself.
There are a couple of delightful lodges in the area that offer excellent horseback riding, river-rafting, all-terrain-vehicle riding and even swimming in a wonderfully warm volcanic river.
