Rincon de la Vieja

Northwest of  Liberia, is the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, which sits within the national park of the same name. The area is famous for its volcano, hot springs, clear rivers and abundant wildlife.

Why visit Rincon de la Vieja ?

  • Take on the 50 foot ‘Tarzan Swing’ challenge whilst canyoning
  • Clear the pores and relax in the bubbling hot springs at Borinquen
  • Head out on horse back to explore the beautiful National Park
  • Go swimming in the warm, steaming Perdido River
  • Mountain bike on rocks, through forest, over bridges plus a few downhills

The Rincon de la Vieja National Park spans over 34,000 acres (12,759 ha) and helps protect both montane forests and dwarf cloud forest. There are a number of trails that wind through the park, passing hot springs and waterfalls along the way. It is also home to a variety of wildlife including sloths, tapirs, kinkajous, pumas and both howler and spider monkeys. Following a recent volcanic eruption it is no longer possible to hike to the crater itself.

There are a couple of delightful lodges in the area that offer excellent horseback riding, river-rafting, all-terrain-vehicle riding and even swimming in a wonderfully warm volcanic river.
