Hiking, Trekking, Canyoning

Mauritius

Although principally thought of as a beach destination, Mauritius’s lush inland parts and majestic scenery are well worth discovering. From dormant volcanos to sacred lakes, Mauritius offers an array of wonderful places perfect for hiking, trekking or simply picknicking, with many walks being an ideal length for a full day trip.

The rolling landscape of Black River Gorges National Park is a popular area for hiking with Curepipe acting as the main starting point.  These trails generally take you through a variety of forest, sugar cane and tea plantations with spectacular views of river valleys perfect for soaking in the timeless charm of a colonial era.

Alternatively you can venture quad biking, canyoning the hidden waterfalls jumping into natural water ponds, sliding down rocks and hiking through rugged terrain, or try bathing in clear waters and the spectacular glides along a zip line.  The waterfall and Seven Coloured Earths at Chamarel are also well worth a visit.

Not to be missed is a leisurely walk amongst the impressive collection of indigenous and exotic plants at the famous Pamplemousse Botanical Gardens.

Deep Sea Fishing

DSC_0007

Mauritius is one of the world’s greatest game fishing countries with plenty of fighting fish such as the blue and black marlin, sailfish, wahoo, barracuda and yellowfin tuna.

It is possible to go deep sea fishing throughout the year, although October until April is generally considered to be the best time.

Mauritius enjoys a subtropical climate and is very much a year round destination. However the best months to visit are from April to November when temperatures are typically in the mid to late 20’s with plenty of sunshine and little rain. The trade winds can make it a little windy at times from July to September, whilst in October and November the winds die down and the temperatures tend to rise.

The rains tend to start in December and are usually at their heaviest in January & February when cyclones can hit the island and then the rains tend to trail off in March.
