The capital of this region, Santa Cruz, is the gateway to one of the least explored and most fascinating parts of Bolivia, an area very different in its population and climate to the highlands. To the northeast of Santa Cruz lie the Jesuit Missions, a number of sleepy little towns each of which have beautiful Jesuit churches. These UNESCO designated churches were built and decorated by hugely skilled craftsmen and boast some of the country’s finest examples of religious art.
