Location: Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountain range and overlooking the battlefield of Spioenkop, Three Tree Hill Lodge is located on the former site of a British military headquarters.
Rooms: The 8 neat and well maintained cottages at Three Tree Hill Lodge are well spaced from each other to allow privacy and feature antique sash windows, wood panelling and corrugated iron exteriors. Each cottage is furnished in understated elegance with a wooden deck and en suite shower & bath with wonderful views over the surrounding area.
Facilities: The dining room serves a buffet-style breakfast and lunch is usually served on the viewing deck or verandah. The lodge offers a fusion of home and modern flavours, in a warm communal atmosphere followed by nightcaps around a blazing fire. You can read and relax in front of an open log fire in the main lounge, whilst there is also a secluded swimming pool where you can relax in a magnificent African outdoor setting.
Activities: Nature walks, battlefield tours, mountain bike rides, game walks, horse riding, Rangeworthy Cemetery walk, Hambrook village excursion, picnic lunch, bird watching.
Children: Children are welcome.
Our Opinion: Step back in time with the haunting memorabilia and old world charm. The lodge offers a wide range of activities – the focus being, of course, the amazing story of the Battle of Spioenkop in 1900 that will be the focal point of your stay. You will enjoy an introductory talk on the origins of the Boer War and the Natal campaign. You can explore the other battlefields in the region or go hiking, mountain biking & horse riding. Bird watchers have the chance to spot some of the 300 species recorded in the area. The nearby Spioenkop Game Reserve affords guests the chance to spot a range of animals that includes rhino, giraffe and zebra.
