Location: Situated in a quiet area approximately 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Karatu and on the edge of the world famous Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Plantation Lodge has a superb setting surrounded by colourful gardens and coffee plantations.
Rooms: The 25 rooms have been individually designed with private verandahs and en suite bathroom facilities, and decorated with local African safari antiques, arts & crafts. The rooms are set in groups amongst the attractive gardens and there are plenty of public areas where you can relax during the day.
Facilities: The lodge offers delicious meals with menu choices ranging from European specialities to Swahili dishes. Only the freshest ingredients are used which are taken from the lodge’s own vegetable garden. There is a swimming pool where you can relax after a dusty day on safari, as well as plenty of chairs dotted around the gardens where you can unwind with a good book. Massages can also be arranged on site.
Activities: Bird watching, hiking, Ngorongoro Carter safaris, coffee plantation tours, visiting local villages.
Children: Children of all ages are welcome.
Our Opinion: An excellent restored colonial coffee plantation property which is within easy reach of both Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Market day in Karatu can also provide a colourful scene when the locals are buying and selling their produce. The Crater itself is the main attraction of the Conservation Area, but equally remarkable are the highlands that roll around the Crater. This is a vast, undulating volcanic landscape, dotted with craters, lakes and fertile soils.
