Bwindi National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in south-western Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley and Its mist-covered hillsides are home to about half the world’s population of mountain gorillas.

• Track the endangered mountain gorilla within the rainforest
• Search for unusual birds along forest trails
• Visit the Batwa (Pygmy) people on a village walk
• Trek for half a day across Bwindi between Nkuringo and Buhoma

This beautiful area of misty rainforest with its extensive stands of bamboo and dense undergrowth is currently home to an estimated 320 gorillas and to go trekking through the forest in search of them is one of the most unusual and exciting wildlife experiences anywhere in Africa.

The gorillas move their ‘nests’ every night and so their location can never be guaranteed, but the chances of seeing one of the habituated groups is excellent and to sit and watch these gentle giants in their natural habitat is a truly rewarding experience.

The four starting points for gorilla treks include Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Please note that the number of trekking permits per day is limited to ensure the gorillas are disturbed as little as possible, and it is therefore important to book well in advance.

Other highlights in the Bwindi region include superb birdwatching, encounters with the Batwa (Pygmy) people, primate walks and the Nkuringo to Buhoma hike.
