Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits high in the clouds and was created to protect the rare mountain gorilla that inhabits its dense forests, as well as providing an important habitat for the endangered golden monkey.

Why visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park ?

  • Visit arguably Uganda’s most scenic national park overlooking the Virunga Mountains
  • Hike through montane forest and moorland to the park’s volcanic peaks
  • Track the endangered golden monkey
  • Follow the Batwa Trail with a local guide demonstrating disappearing traditions & culture

Mgahinga is one of Uganda’s most scenic national parks: its most striking features are the three conical, extinct volcanoes which form part of the spectacular Virunga Range straddling the border region of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. The volcanoes’ slopes are biologically diverse, and their peaks provide a striking backdrop to this remarkable landscape.

Resident wildlife includes mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, black & white colobus, elephant, buffalo, various antelope and a wide range of birdlife.

This is superb hiking country for the adventurous, as well as a potential base for tracking mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. It is also possible to experience traditional Batwa (Pygmy) forest culture.
