Swim with Whale Sharks

Whale shark, Mexico

Every year from June to September,  whale sharks arrive along the Yucatan coastline including Contoy Island and Holbox Island offering marine wildlife lovers a truly unforgettable experience. To swim close to the biggest fish in the world can be done in a few places around the world, but here in Mexico offers the largest gathering of whale sharks and it is believed to be due to the large amount of nutrients that is found in this part of the Caribbean. This is a truly magical wildlife encounter and can also be done on a private basis with your own guide and boat.

Swim in a private cenote

Cenote, Mexico

Dotted around the Yucatan peninsula are dozens of cenotes, some of which you can hire on a private basis and this is the perfect way to relax after a hot, busy day’s sightseeing. These beautiful natural sinkholes are formed when the limestone bedrock above collapses into the water below leaving a hole in the earth that results in these secret turquoise-coloured pools. Cenotes are unique to this area and each one is different and some are part of a massive underground network of rivers and caves that remain, for the large part, unexplored. You can swim and relax at a private cenote with a sumptuous picnic lunch – a heavenly way to spend the day!

November to May are generally the drier months across Mexico so typically the best time to visit. June and July tend to be hotter and more humid just before the rains arrive in late July.

August to October tend to be the wettest months and this is when hurricanes can sometimes appear especially on the Pacific coast, so not a great time to visit.
