The region is host to 16 ethnic groups including the mighty Zapotecs and Mixtecs who once ruled this region of Mexico prior to the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores. Highlights include visits to the ruins of the Zapotec city of Monte Alban, the religious site of Mitla and the ancient Tule Tree. Also these vibrant cultures still maintain many of their centuries old traditions of back strap weaving, black pottery and elaborate wood carving and offer the traveller incredible opportunities to look back into Mexico’s colourful past.

In addition, Oaxaca’s diverse topography is unrivaled and the area is a world of mountains almost 10,000 feet high, caverns among the deepest in the world, hidden jungles and intriguing valleys.
