The region is host to 16 ethnic groups including the mighty Zapotecs and Mixtecs who once ruled this region of Mexico prior to the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores. Also these vibrant cultures still maintain many of their centuries old traditions of back strap weaving, black pottery and elaborate wood carving and offer the traveller incredible opportunities to look back into Mexico’s colourful past.
