Carmelo

Lying to the west of Colonia close to where the Uruguay River flows into the mighty Rio del Plata, Carmelo is a delightfully relaxed riverside town and the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires.

Why visit Carmelo ?

  • Escape from the hustle and bustle of Montevideo and Buenos Aires
  • Enjoy some sublime winetasting at the wonderful Narbona Winery
  • Relax on a sunset cruise amongst the islands of the Rio Plata delta
  • Saddle up and enjoy a polo lesson with the maestros
  • Test yourself on Carmelo’s par 72 championship golf course

The cobbled streets are lined with historic houses and some interesting museums as well as a few excellent steakhouses (parillas) frequented by the friendly locals who generally get about on bikes rather than in cars.  The town’s main attractions are its many outdoor pursuits with some great fishing, sailing, canoeing and wonderful horse riding through the unspoiled countryside.  Alternatively you could try your hand at some polo or a little wine tasting at the local finca.
